Heading to a big-box chain for last-minute children’s gifts to go under the tree this Christmas? Consider buying local instead—you’ll feel the difference. Families have been falling in love with a tiny toy store in West Austin called Over the Rainbow for over 35 years!
“Some of my most fond childhood memories involved family trips to Over the Rainbow,” remembers Erin McClanahan of Tarrytown. “My mother would take us there after doctor visits as our reward for our bravery. I’d spend hours there amidst the toys and books—it was heaven! I think it was harder to get us out of that toy store than it was to get us to the doctor for those shots!” Erin has three children of her own now and still treasures trips to Over the Rainbow with her family.
Looking for something in particular? Over the Rainbow offers a traditional toy selection– Breyer collectibles, Kettler tricycles, Ravensburger puzzles, Madame Alexander dolls, Playmobil playsets, Thames and Kosmos science kits and more– as well as a broad selection of board and picture books. A nice perk? The store will gift-wrap most of your purchases for free! You definitely won’t find service like that at a big-name store.
To reach Over the Rainbow from Central Austin, take Lake Austin Blvd and when you reach Exposition Blvd., head north into Tarrytown. After the light at Westover Rd., Cassis Shopping Center will approach on your right. Turn in at the second entrance (at the Starbucks). Over the Rainbow is a few stores from a late afternoon Mocha Frappuccino, which you may need to get your children out of the store! The street address is 2727 Exposition Blvd., Austin, TX 78703.
Merry shopping!
