USA Cycling has selected Austin, Texas as the host for the 2015 Cyclo-cross National Championships. The competition will be held at Zilker Park near the heart of Downtown Austin.
“Being chosen to host the 2015 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships is both an honor and an exciting opportunity for Austin,” said Austin City Council Member Chris Riley. “Cyclo-cross is a fast-growing sport that is gaining more and more followers in Austin, and this event will help accelerate its establishment as an important part of our local cycling culture.”
The Cyclo-cross National Championships are expected to bring nearly 2,000 competitors and 10,000 spectators to the capital city. USA Cycling evaluated potential host cities with criteria including accessibility, community support, course options, technical expertise and commitment to volunteer recruitment, marketing and lodging. The city is also required to host an international-caliber test event before the national championships.
“Austin is pumped,” declared Matthew Payne, executive director of the Austin Sports Commission in Central Austin. “This event will be another chance to showcase our dynamic city to cyclo-cross athletes all over the country. Austin is long overdue for an event of this caliber and we’re excited about working closely with USA Cycling officials and sharing this with our strong cycling community.”
Austin, with its well-established cycling community, was recently rated by Bicycling Magazine as one of the Top 20 Most Bike-Friendly Cities in America. Forbes Travel named it among the top cycling cities in America
